EXTRA, EXTRA!!!! READ ALL ABOUT IT! BRAIN FINALLY FOUND ON COMMON!!!!!!

THE TAMBAROORA TIMES STUMBLES UPON INTELLIGENT LIFE

ON COMMON!!!!

AND IT'S

CRANKY!
Rare sighting of the enraged Brain, found on the Common, this week.

BRAIN
Hey you! What’s this I hear about Crown Lands wanting to turn me into a Crown Reserve?

THE TIMES
"The White Paper"? The aim is to simplify the management of Crown Lands. They want to remove outdated legislation.

BRAIN
Outdated??? I’m nearly a 140 years young!!!!!

  THE TIMES
Crown Lands reckon you’re historically redundant.

BRAIN

How dare they!!!! I’m the evocative, and educational, backdrop to a remote-area Historic Site. I'm meant to have History!!
Who’s going to look after me??

                                                                       THE TIMES

Bathurst Regional Council is one possibility.

BRAIN

BRC???? They can’t even manage the tip!! You’ve got a town full of drunks and there’s not one recycling bay for bottles!!

THE TIMES
Well it's a long way to come.

BRAIN

Exactly! Those guys have trouble stepping up to their civic responsibility in the Village. How the hell are they going to deal with the site-specific problems the Common presents?

THE TIMES

The plan does talk about the importance of local consultation.

BRAIN
Give me a break! How much more local can you get than the Common Trust.
Commoners, elected by Commoners, available and contactable, at any time, by Commoners
It doesn’t get more local than that. You got a problem with the Common? How easy is it to lobby your own community?

THE TIMES
Some people are a bit cynical about the Common Trust.

BRAIN
Oh really??? I'm speechless!

Shocked Brain, struggles to find words, on hearing of Community Cynicism toward Common Trust.

BRAIN
Then, those people should get involved! Let their opinions be known! And the Trust needs to get out more. You!!! You’ve got a newspaper. You should write more stuff  about what’s going on. I mean stuff is going on isn’t it?

THE TIMES
Oh yeah! Noel Kim has just finished the annual weed-spraying program.  He’s now working with the Turon Macquarie Weeds Working Group, trying to marshal a lobby to get BRC to fine landowners who won’t deal with weeds like Serrated-Tussock.

BRAIN
So you have a council responsible of some of the finest Merino producing country in Australia and they don’t take weed management seriously??
That bodes well doesn’t it? Too bloody busy stamping Development Approvals for Raglan.
Talk about an aesthetic by-pass!

THE TIMES
Steady on! They're really an urban-council now.

BRAIN
Exactly! What would they know about feral animals? Apart from those staggering around on the street after closing time?
What's the Common Trust doing about feral animals? There’s days here I can’t think for the sound of rutting goats!

THE TIMES
We’re in negotiation with someone at the moment. Mobile yards….

BRAIN
…Well get a move on! Betty Jeffree's garden was monstered this year!

THE TIMES
She's on NPWS land!!!

BRAIN
You two should be working together on this!

THE TIMES
Yeah, well we tried, but they didn't want to, so then we...

BRAIN
...Enough! The two of you are behaving like children!

THE TIMES
Well they started it!

BRAIN
I don't care who started it! The two of you should be working together on this.

THE TIMES
We do an annual fox-baiting programme! And we’ve got pig traps permanently set-up and regularly checked. We’ve got plans to deal with a host of issues on the Common.

BRAIN
That’s more than Crown Lands or Bathurst Regional Council will ever have. I doubt there'd be many who ever stepped foot on the Common!

THE TIMES
That's part of Crown Land’s argument too. They’re saying that Commons are only there for Commoners whereas, as a Crown Reserve, it would be there for everyone.

BRAIN
Are these people aware that 3 of the must-see sights on NPWS' Village Itinerary, Bald Hill, Kissing Point and Beaufoy-Merlin Lookout are on the Common?? There would not be one of the, estimated 274  daily visitors don’t visit at least, one of them!! Don't these people know this is Common Land not NPWS Estate?

THE TRUST
We're about to tell them.

BRAIN
How?

THE TRUST
New signage.

BRAIN
Well it keep it simple and make it stylish! We don't want The Common looking like a bloody sign convention!

THE TRUST
The Trust wants to build a walking track and a viewing platform above Kitty’s Falls.

BRAIN
A walking track??? That's a step in the right direction!  Have you seen what these trucks, people are driving these days, have done to the bloody roads??
And what about the fossickers? How can people claim the Common isn't there for all??  It’s like a bad case of measles out here some days.

THE TIMES
The Kuring-gai Orienteering club want to hold the 2017 National Championshipson the Common? 600 Orienteers.
And then there's the Artists!

BRAIN
Bloody Artists!

THE TIMES
....They find enormous inspiration here. See...!

A selection of The Tambaroora Tablets by Michael Ramsden

BRAIN
When and where was this show? Lunchtime at the Jean Bellete Gallery?

THE TIMES
No! International Exhibition. Frankfurt. Then there's the Hill End Arts' Council.
They'd love to hold a Sculpture Exhibition on the Common

BRAIN
There’s some significant archaeology on the Common you know?

THE TIMES
Not too many people know about thar stuff.

BRAIN
Are you kidding? The fossickers get stuck into them. Pulling apart 150 year old stone walls to find a boot nail! There’s stuff on this common needs protecting!

THE TIMES
We reckon, the Common Trust, as a local body, is better placed than BRC to keep an eye on the place.

BRAIN
True! What are the Trust doing to fight this plan?

THE TIMES
We've obtained an extension on the deadline for submissions. Someone's been busy trying to obtain contact details for the other 121 or so Commons affected by this to mount a united fight..

BRAIN
What else?

THE TIMES
A meeting with the Honourable Kevin Humphries, the Honourable Paul Toole, and, hopefully the Honourable Andrew Stoner in Sydney is being arranged. We've printed up pubic notices. We're using social media...

BRAIN
What about a public meeting?

THE TIMES
A date is pending.

BRAIN
I feel happier.

The Endorphins kick in and the Brain finally smiles.

THE BRAIN WHISTLES LONG AND LOUD. THE SOUND OF  HOOVES CAN BE HEARD APPROACHING THROUGH THE BUSH. A WILD BEAST COMES TO A THUNDERING STOP BESIDE US.

THE TIMES
OMG!!! WTF??? A stegosaurus!!!

BRAIN
Diprotodon actually. Meet "Steve".

The Brain’s trusty Steed "Steve" the Diprotodon.

THE TIMES
Diprotodon??? Isn't that a giant wombat? Aren’t they extinct????

BRAIN
Not when you know where to look! Some dickhead tried to burn him. Thought he was a lump of firewood!

THE BRAIN MOUNTS "STEVE" AND HEADS OFF, INTO A TAMBABOORAN SUNSET, TOWARD THEIR SECRET HOME.

Karin you are fantastic. A well done dissertation on a very vexed issue. Crown Lands have been trying to open up our Common for a whole lot of stupid "recreational " pursuits that would destroy the peaceful ambience of our beautiful bushland. Your Times article highlights the fact and hopefully will make a lot of people sit up and take notice. Luv Ya

  5. Thanks Mal
It's a worry, that's for sure. The recommendations also talk about "streamlining" DAs for Crown Reserves with community notification occurring via a "one stop" online portal.
One thrust of the recommendations also links into Regional "Development" plans.
Anyway I will be busy over the next two weeks preparing the submission on behalf of the Common Trust.
Thanks for the feedback. Even better that it is so positive!
    Cheers
